Supporting text helps guide users by appearing beneath a form field to explain how to fill it out. This article explains how to add and customize supporting text and callouts within form fields.
What is Supporting Text?
Supporting text appears directly under a form field to offer additional context or instructions.
Example: The text "Your receipt will be sent to this address" beneath an email field is supporting text.
What is a Callout?
A callout is a type of supporting text that only appears when the user focuses on (clicks into) a form field. This keeps the form clean and uncluttered while still offering help when it’s most needed.
Example: A message appears only when the user clicks into the field.
How to Add or Edit Supporting Text
Click on the form field you want to edit. In the field settings panel on the left, locate the “Supporting Text” input box & enter the help text you want to display.
How to Make Supporting Text a Callout
To convert supporting text into a callout: Select the form field. Check the “Use Callout” option on the left hand-side.
Important Notes About Callouts
Not supported for:
- Radio buttons
- Checkboxes
- File upload fields
Note: These field types are not compatible because users only see the callout after making a selection.
Additional Behavior of Callouts:
Radio/checkbox callouts trigger only once per selection.
The callout is removed when another input field is focused (e.g., clicking into a text field).
The callout stays visible if the user clicks outside the form or document, unless another field is focused.
